I talk to lots of people about how great the team at Regional and Rural Mental Health Services are, and I have often recommended their psychologists to friends and acquaintances. I have been seeing Dr Pamela Seaton for over a year now. She has provided autism-specific psychological support that has made a big difference in my life.
A friend recommended that I see Pamela for an autism diagnosis. I find Pamela very kind and I enjoy my appointments with her. I also feel like she works with me in very practical ways and as I result I have considerably improved my life skills and social skills. She has helped me to get onto the NDIS and is also helping me to work towards my goals effectively. I have friends and acquaintances who talk in a similar positive way about Barbara and Therese, so I know that it’s a good practice, not just a practice with a good psychologist. Andrew, the practice manager, is also great, and often really patient with me.
The waiting room and Pamela’s consulting room are sensory-friendly, and I have never felt like there were too many people there. I have found everyone understanding and accommodating of my needs.
Outcomes – Since I started seeing Pamela I am more independent in starting my housework tasks and getting them finished. I feel more confident and proud about my ability to take care of myself and my responsibilities. As a result of learning about social skills, I feel more confident spending time with friends as well as making and sticking to plans. I feel like I am doing well at getting along with coworkers and understanding them. I have consistently stuck with my goal of studying, and I am now nearly finished my first post-graduate qualification. I feel proud of myself and my self esteem has improved dramatically. Before I started seeing Pamela I had a lot of days where I didn’t leave the house, and I didn’t do anything at home that was of value. Now playing video games and going on facebook is something I do after work and housework, and I feel like my life has a lot of purpose.
Negatives – There are several steps up to the building and I am unsure about wheelchair accessibility. Perhaps there is an accessible entrance or staff have some way to work around this. Pamela is heavily booked and this may be the same for other psychologists, especially as the NDIS ramps up. I work around this by booking my appointments far ahead.
