March was an absolutely amazing month here at CareNavigator.com. In only our second month live and three months since we started this journey, it’s incredible to see thousands of people coming to find, review and recognise great NDIS care providers. We also passed more than 2300 provider services listed across Australia and look forward to that number continuing to grow with Queensland signing on to NDIS and major rollouts to more regions in 2016.
We have been really humbled by the enthusiasm and positive feedback we’ve received from people with disability, carers and care providers. It’s really great to hear from you. Whether you want to tell us you love CareNavigator or let us know about something that didn’t quite work, you’re helping us deliver on our mission to help people empower each other to make informed choices about care and support.
CareNavigator.com is all about the community of people who come here to find, review and recognise great care providers. We believe that information is key to making good choices and that by sharing knowledge and experience we empower each other with the information to make good choices. In the spirit of this, we wanted to share some interesting information on the NDIS services our community is searching for on CareNavigator.com.
According to Speech Pathology Australia, “Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speech, language, social communication, swallowing, fluency and voice. They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of developmental delays, stroke, brain injuries, learning disability, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other problems that can affect speech and language. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a speech pathologist“.
Occupational Therapy Australia defines the purpose of Occupational Therapy as “to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life.” With a core function of the NDIS being to support people with disability in achieving their goals and living full lives in an inclusive community, it is no wonder Occupational Therapy features among our top searches on CareNavigator.com.au.
The National Disability Insurance Agency defines Support Coordination as “Assistance to strengthen participants’ abilities to coordinate and implement supports and participate more fully in the community.’ It can include initial assistance with linking participants with the right providers to meet their needs, assistance to source providers, coordinating a range of supports both funded and mainstream and building on informal supports, resolving points of crisis, parenting training and developing participant resilience in their own network and community.”
Disability Support Workers provide assistance for independent living. The nature of this role varies with the needs of the person, however the types of work can include helping people with personal care, participation in community activities, maintain relationships and social engagement.
The Australian Physiotherapy Association defines physiotherapy as a profession which “assesses, diagnoses, treats, and works to prevent disease and disability through physical means. Physiotherapists are experts in movement and function who work in partnership with their patients, assisting them to overcome movement disorders, which may have been present from birth, acquired through accident or injury, or are the result of ageing or life-changing events.”
While dentistry was also a popular search topic on CareNavigator.com, we left dentistry off our list and we wanted to take a moment to share this choice with you. While oral health is a leading indicator of a person’s overall health, the NDIA’s fact sheet on Supports the NDIS will fund in relation to healthcare explicitly excludes dental care.
We hope you find this type of information interesting. If you do (or don’t) let us know. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for new ways to improve CareNavigator.com
We’re excited to see where Care Navigator can go and look forward to sharing this journey with you. If you know a great provider offering one of these services (or others) please do give them a review. Our Quick Review page makes it fast and easy to share your experience and help the community.
